The guide

Beach trip tips for happy, safe dogs

A great beach day comes down to a few simple habits: keep them hydrated, protect the paws, manage the heat, respect the water, and pack out clean. Here's how we do it on the Gulf Coast — plus the gear that makes each one easier.

Hydration

Fresh water beats sea water — always

Dogs lap salt water when they're hot, and it can upset their stomach fast. Bring more fresh water than you think you need and offer it every 20–30 minutes. A collapsible bowl that clips to your bag makes this effortless.

The 7-second sand test

Press the back of your hand to the sand for seven seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for paws. Walk near the wet shoreline, take breaks in the shade, and rinse paws afterward to clear salt and grit.

Beat the heat

Shade and breaks prevent the meltdown

Even water-loving dogs overheat. Set up a shaded spot for downtime, watch for heavy panting, and cool your dog down between play sessions. A pop-up tent plus a damp cooling bandana go a long way on a hot day.

Make fetch float — and stay safe

Floating toys keep surf fetch fun and visible. But toys are toys: they are not lifesaving devices and shouldn't be relied on to keep a dog afloat. Always supervise around water, know your dog's swimming limits, and watch the tide and currents.

After dark

Be seen on the dusk walk

Beach walks at sunset are magic — but visibility drops fast. A rechargeable LED collar and reflective harness make sure drivers, cyclists and you can spot your dog on dim boardwalks and parking lots.
